New standard accelerates car upgrade

With Beijing leading the way with new standards to cut emissions, experts think related upgrades are set to take place across the country. Certainly, big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou are all set to follow in Beijing's footsteps.

Experts point out that the new standards are likely to lead to faster upgrades in the manufacture of vehicles.

Jia Xinguang, Senior Analyst said "For older brands, like the models from the 80s or the early 90s, they will be phased out from the Beijing market."

Expert say older cars based on earlier standards will slowly be phased out of the Beijing market. But models with new standards are currently running a bit short in Beijing because of insufficient supplies. And prices are headed up because of low production output, and the recent bad weather in southern China.

Guo Yong, Manager of BJ Yayuncun Car Sales Market said "The price of cars sold in Beijing will probably remain high for a period of time, some brands might even raise prices further. However, in the long run, car prices are likely to decline."
